Sierra Designs salutes Norse snow gods with trio of shred-ready ski packs for 2012
January 26, 2012
BOULDER, COLO. (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) – Sierra Designs (www.sierradesigns.com), an innovator in backcountry gear, will debut three new ski and snowboard packs for fall 2012.
Named for the Norse gods of winter, the Freyr, Ullr and Ymir packs are designed for backcountry and sidecountry use, for no-nonsense performance, and for skiers and snowboarders searching for the perfect pack that just does what it’s supposed to do – without the extra frills and extra weight.
“The perfect backcountry pack is a lot like the perfect backcountry partner – reliable, strong, and can always be counted on for a few pleasant surprises,” said Sue Timbo, Sierra Designs director of marketing. “SD’s new packs are built for consistent, real-world performance … not drama.”
The Freyr is Sierra Design’s light-and-fast entry in the category. The pack’s sleek sidecountry design is just the right size for a full-size shovel, skins, goggles, lunch and carrying straps for skis or snowboard ($99; 1lb., 11oz.).
Stepping up for big backcountry days is the Ullr ($169), a pack designed for all-day tours or laps in the perfect glade. Built to carry skis or a snowboard, the Ullr has a dedicated skins pocket designed to be used without removing the pack. A dedicated snow-safety compartment with glove-friendly zipper pulls makes it easy and fast to get to gear when you need it. The Ullr is available in Small/Medium (1800 cu in; 3lb., 5oz.) and Medium/Large (1950 cu in; 3lb., 9oz.).
For extended tours, Sierra Designs’ Ymir ($199) is a multi-day carrying machine. Perfect for a hut trip or overnight ski mountaineering adventure, the Ymir comes in two sizes: Small/Medium (3300 cu in; 4lb., 6oz.) and Medium/Large (3600 cu in, 4lb 9oz).
The two larger packs feature a true backpack suspension system, allowing comfortable load-carry of all the necessary backcountry and safety gear. Superior load support eliminates wasted energy, keeping the wearer skiing and riding long into the day.
The suspension consists of an HDPE framesheet with aluminum stays; thermo-molded, S-curve shoulder straps; a thermo-molded, pre-curved waist belt; and stabilizing straps on the shoulders, sternum and waist.
These packs also excel in their assortment of quick-access pockets and compartments, making it faster and easier to get snacks and water, as well as essential rescue gear in an emergency. Storage compartments include a snow-safety pocket for shovel and probe, a snow-shedding back panel, a Helmet Carry System and a fleece-lined goggle pocket.
All packs are set up for diagonal or A-frame ski carry; or vertical snowboard carry for riders.
