(April 28, 2008) - Boulder Colo. (April 28, 2008) – For the second time
in three years, Outside Magazine gave a Sierra Designs sleeping bag
their annual Gear of the Year award thanks to the green innovation in
the new Verde 20 sleeping bag. The Verde 20 uses 95-percent recycled
material to create one of the most environmentally friendly sleeping
bags available. With features and performance rivaling any bag on the
market, the Boulder-based Sierra Designs product development team was
able to create this highly sustainable bag without cutting any corners
on performance.
"Our goal in developing the Verde 20 and Déjà Vu 20 (our women's
version) was to create a sleeping bag with high performance traits and
low environmental footprint impact. We succeeded on both fronts and the
environment is ultimately the big winner," said Phil Mesdag, Sierra
Designs equipment product manager.
The editors of Outside magazine noted that they were impressed with
warmth, and consistency of Climashield Green, the 100-percent recycled
synthetic insulation used in the Verde 20. The editors also felt the
sustainable, all-natural Cocona – a feature exclusive to Sierra Designs
sleeping bags – was a nice touch for improved moisture management and
odor prevention.
"The Verde 20 is an impressive bag all the way around, but it was
the insulation and liner that won over this year's testers," said
Buyer's Guide editor Sam Moulton. "The insulation, which is called
ClimaShield Green and is made out of recycled soda bottles, never
clumped up or shifted about while the Cocona lining gave the bag a dry,
fresh feel."
The performance of the Verde 20 is what made this sleeping bag
stand out from the rest of the field. A sustainable, compressible,
20-degree sleeping bag with smart touches like pad locks and Sierra
Designs' legendary fit made the Verde 20 Outside's Gear of the Year.
"We are thrilled with receiving yet another Gear of the Year award
from Outside. This is our third award from Outside, after winning in
2005 for our Reverse Combi tent and in 2006 for our Trade Wind sleeping
bag, and it is a testament to our strive for innovation and performance
in our gear," said Kristine Carey, Sierra Designs brand manager.
Sierra Designs' 40 years of sleeping bag design experience is
elevating the brand with consistent performance across the entire line
– from ultralight summer bags, like the Arrow Rock 45, to bombproof
expedition bags, like the Echo -20.
Sierra Designs will continue to push the envelope with innovations
that will make everyone's outdoor experience better. In 2008, the
company launched a fully redesigned line of Flex Technology bags,
incorporated a revolutionary new anti-bacterial treatment into its
expedition bags called Funk!Off, and rolled out company-wide
sustainability initiatives, like eliminating PVC from all seam tape in
its tents, sleeping bags and apparel.
